Palmanova Fortresss

Palmanova was founded on October 7, 1593, by the Republic of Venice. Originally conceived as a defensive stronghold against the Ottomans, it was later intended to become the most important Venetian base on the mainland, a project that was not fully realized. The oversized main square still bears witness to these ambitious plans. For over two centuries, the fortress served to defend against the Habsburgs. In 1797, it was conquered by Napoleon, who initially ceded Venetia to Austria, then incorporated it into his Kingdom of Italy, and finally had to cede it back to Austria. The capitulation of Venice took place in Palmanova. In 1866, the city fell to Italy. During World War I, Palmanova played an important role as an Italian base behind the Isonzo Front. In 1960, Palmanova was declared a national monument.
