The ruin of Finlarig Castle, once a fortress of the Campbell clan, stands on a peninsula between the River Lochay and Loch Tay in Scotland.

History+

The origins of Finlarig Castle date back to 1629, when it was built by 'Black' Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy, also known as Donnchadh Dubh. Designed as an L-shaped tower house, it was one of numerous fortifications owned by the Campbell Clan of Breadalbane in the regions of Argyll and Perthshire. In 1713, the castle was visited by Rob Roy MacGregor. A legend surrounds a stone pit near the north wall: it is said to have been used for the beheading of noble prisoners, while commoners were hanged from a nearby oak.
