Foro di Augusto (Forum of Augustus)

The remains of the ancient town can be visited

The Forum of Augustus in Rome is a central part of the Imperial Forums. It was conceived as an extension of the Roman Forum and served to glorify Emperor Augustus.

History+

Although Augustus decided to build a new forum after the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC, the Temple of Mars Ultor (the Avenger) was not dedicated until forty years later. This temple, made of Carrara marble, had eight front columns and housed a statue of Mars, as well as Caesar's sword and legionary insignia. The forum, completed in 2 BC, emphasized the emperor's role as a restorer of ancient traditions.
