Fort Boyard

Off the French Atlantic coast, Fort Boyard stands, a fortress once built to protect the Rochefort naval arsenal. Situated between Île d'Aix and Île d'Oléron, this structure has an unusual history of origin.
History+
The necessity to secure the Rochefort naval arsenal led to considerations for a fortress at this location as early as the 17th century. Despite initial plans by Vauban, who deemed the project unfeasible, construction only began in 1801 under Napoleon. Difficult conditions due to strong currents and tides only allowed seasonal construction during low tide. In 1809, work ceased as the foundation blocks sank into the sand. It was not until 1837, in light of renewed tensions between France and England, that construction resumed. The base was completed by 1848, with the superstructures following by 1857.
