Fort Darnet, a fortress, was built on an island in the River Medway in Kent, England. It was part of a defense system designed to protect the inner navigable channel of the river.

History+

The construction of Fort Darnet was based on the recommendations of the 1859 Royal Commission. Originally, a design with two tiers of guns mounted in a circle was planned, supplemented by a boom stretched between the forts. However, problems with subsidence arose during construction, leading to cost overruns. In 1871, the fortress was finally completed with only one tier of guns and eleven cannons, including 9-inch and 7-inch rifled muzzle-loaders. A boom was not realized. The fortress was never used in combat and was disarmed before the First World War. During the Second World War, Fort Darnet served as an observation post, with additional platforms and pillboxes built on top of the structure.
