Fort du Mengant

The origins of Fort du Mengant date back to 1684, when it was built by Vauban. The complex originally consisted of an upper battery at approximately 58 meters above sea level, which included a now-destroyed artillery tower, and a lower, semicircular battery at the foot of the cliff, complemented by two small powder magazines. Together with the opposing Batterie de Cornouaille on the Roscanvel peninsula, built to the same model as the lower part of Fort du Mengant, the aim was to block access to the Brest roadstead. Original plans envisioned an additional battery on the Roche Mengant in the Goulet, but this proved unfeasible due to the strong tides and currents.
