Fort Frederica

In 1736, General James Oglethorpe, the founder of the Georgia colony, established Fort Frederica. With the support of English, Scottish, German, and Swiss colonists, as well as the Yamacraw Indians, the complex was built on the Frederica River. It was named in honor of Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales, with the feminine form chosen to avoid confusion with Fort Frederick in South Carolina. The fortress was surrounded by palisades, an embankment, a ditch, and a glacis, while the brick fort itself served as a citadel directly on the riverbank. In 1740, Oglethorpe unsuccessfully besieged Spanish forts in Florida. Two years later, Spanish troops attacked St. Simons Island, leading to the Battle of Bloody Marsh. Oglethorpe managed to repel the Spanish and secure British rule in the region. Following a peace treaty and the end of the Spanish threat, the fort was abandoned in 1748, the stationed regiment disbanded, and the inhospitable settlement deserted, after which the complex fell into disrepair. In 1936, the site was declared a National Monument, and starting in 1947, archaeological excavations began, leading to the uncovering and partial reconstruction of the site.

Fort Frederica is located in Brunswick, Glynn County, Georgia, USA, at an elevation of approximately 5 m above sea level.

Today, the fort is open for visitors. It features a visitor center with exhibitions on the colonial era and the Yamacraw Indians. Living History demonstrations in historical costumes are regularly offered, and parts of the fortifications have been reconstructed to provide an impression of the original complex.
