Fort Hackenberg (Veckring)

Initially, a longer construction period was planned for Fort Hackenberg, but in light of Germany's increasing military armament, the facility was completed in just five years. It comprises two entrance blocks, one for ammunition and one for personnel, as well as seventeen combat positions. The multi-story bunkers are connected underground by an electric narrow-gauge subway system, over four kilometers long, primarily used for transporting ammunition. In total, more than ten kilometers of tunnels were carved into the rock. The above-ground parts were constructed from durable blue concrete. With a garrison of approximately 1,000 men and 43 officers, the fortress was self-sufficient and featured extensive weaponry, its own power plant, a large kitchen, and a hospital. During the German occupation of France in World War II, no battles occurred at Fort Hackenberg, as the Maginot Line was bypassed. The French surrendered the facility without a fight, leading one soldier to commit suicide. The Germans later used the tunnels for underground factories. It was not until 1944, during the German retreat, that a German troop occupied Block 8 and shelled the Allies. Thanks to the knowledge of a former French officer, the Allies were able to bypass Block 8 and, after four days of shelling, forced the German troops to retreat, during which they blew up ammunition depot 3.

Fort Hackenberg is situated in Veckring in the Moselle department of the Lorraine region, France, at an elevation of approximately 240 meters above sea level.

Today, Fort Hackenberg is a museum and largely very well preserved, having suffered only minor war damage. The association “AMIFORT” is dedicated to its preservation and has made the facility accessible to the public since 1975. Visitors can participate in guided tours, which include a ride on the narrow-gauge subway and a demonstration of a revolving gun turret. Inside, a constant temperature of 12 °C prevails, so warm clothing is recommended.
