The Fort can be visited

On a headland at Vazon Bay in Castel, Guernsey, lies Fort Hommet. It combines defensive structures from several centuries, including a Martello tower from the Napoleonic Wars and bunker constructions from World War II.

History+

The origins of fortifications at this point date back to 1680. An expansion occurred in 1804 with the construction of a Martello tower, initiated by Lieutenant Governor General Sir John Doyle during the Napoleonic Wars. This tower, smaller than its British counterparts, served as a redoubt for the surrounding battery and was equipped with a 24-pounder carronade on its roof. During the Victorian Era, additional batteries and barracks were added, and the armament was modernized with 68-pounder and 8-inch shell guns.
