The Fort can be visited

Fort Hoo is a fortification located on an island in the River Medway. It protected, along with Fort Darnet, the inner navigable channel of the river in the Kent region of England.

History+

The construction of Fort Hoo was based on the recommendations of the 1859 Royal Commission. It was intended to secure the River Medway. Originally, the fortress was planned to house two tiers of guns in a circular arrangement and be connected to Fort Darnet by a boom. However, problems with subsidence arose during construction, leading to cost overruns. In 1871, the fort was finally completed with a single tier of eleven 9-inch rifled muzzle-loading guns; the planned river boom was not implemented.
