Fort I (Wesel)

Fort I was constructed during the building of the Wesel railway bridge between 1872 and 1874 by the Cöln-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft. This bridge was a component of the Hamburg-Venloer railway line. Prussia mandated a route through the then-fortress of Wesel to ensure the military utility of the bridge. Soldiers were intended to defend it in wartime and use it as a staging point for operations to the west.
