Fort Leicester

The origins of Fort Leicester date back to the late 16th century. Approximately five decades after a French attack on Jersey, it was constructed as a battery to safeguard the island from further invasions. It was named after Robert Dudley, the 1st Earl of Leicester and a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I. Initially equipped with only a single cannon, the facility was expanded into a fort about 50 years later under the Lieutenant Governor, receiving a gun platform and several cannons. A garrison of 30 militiamen subsequently occupied the fort. However, in 1836, it was recognized that the fortress was no longer adequate for the demands of modern warfare, especially against fast steamships, leading to the withdrawal of the garrison. During World War II, German occupiers used Fort Leicester as a site for a searchlight.

Fort Leicester is located in Bouley Bay, part of the parish of Trinity, on the Channel Island of Jersey. This island is a Crown Dependency of the United Kingdom. The facility is situated at an elevation of approximately 21 meters above sea level.

Today, Fort Leicester is privately owned and serves as a holiday home for tourists. Visitors have the opportunity to explore the fort and experience its historical ambiance.
