Fort Leicester is a prominent historical fortification situated above Bouley Bay on the north coast of the Channel Island of Jersey. Originally designed as a coastal battery, it served to protect against invasions and today stands as a testament to military architecture of past centuries.
History+
The origins of Fort Leicester date back to the late 16th century. Approximately five decades after a French attack on Jersey, it was constructed as a battery to safeguard the island from further invasions. It was named after Robert Dudley, the 1st Earl of Leicester and a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I. Initially equipped with only a single cannon, the facility was expanded into a fort about 50 years later under the Lieutenant Governor, receiving a gun platform and several cannons. A garrison of 30 militiamen subsequently occupied the fort. However, in 1836, it was recognized that the fortress was no longer adequate for the demands of modern warfare, especially against fast steamships, leading to the withdrawal of the garrison. During World War II, German occupiers used Fort Leicester as a site for a searchlight.
