Fort Napoleon

The fortress was built between 1811 and 1814 by order of Napoleon, intended as a starting point for a potential invasion of Great Britain. Upon its completion, which coincided with the collapse of the French Empire, the fort was first used by British and later by Dutch troops, who named it “Fort Willem I” after King William I. With the founding of Belgium in 1830, it was officially named “Fort Leopold,” but it remained popularly known as “Fort Napoleon.” Although it lost its status as a fortress in 1865, it was briefly used during the Franco-Prussian War to intern French prisoners of war. In both World War I and World War II, it served as a military base for German occupation forces. After years of decay, the fort was transferred to the Flemish Heritage Foundation in 1995 and extensively restored before reopening as a museum in 2000.

Fort Napoleon is located in Ostend, a coastal city in the province of West-Vlaanderen (West Flanders) in the region of Vlaanderen (Flanders), Belgium. It stands at an elevation of approximately 9 meters above sea level.

Today, Fort Napoleon is open to the public and can be visited. It serves as a museum, offering insights into its eventful history and architecture.
