History+

The origins of the fortifications in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon date back to the time of Philip the Fair. Fort Saint-André acquired its current form under the reign of John the Good, who ruled from 1350 to 1364, and his successor Charles V, whose reign lasted from 1364 to 1380. The only access to this fortress is via the Porte Saint-André, flanked by two crenellated round towers.
