On a headland in Saint Peter, Guernsey, stands Fort Saumarez.

The construction of Fort Saumarez began in 1804 during the Napoleonic Wars. Under the direction of Lieutenant Governor General Sir John Doyle, the tower was built on the site of an existing battery. Doyle named the fortress after Sir James Saumarez, a naval captain born in Guernsey. To expedite construction, Doyle commissioned a local builder, bypassing the usual procedures of the Ordnance Corps. Fort Saumarez, like other Martello towers on Guernsey, was intended as a keep for the surrounding battery.
