Fort V (Köln)

Fort V, Zülpicher Straße 41, built 1843–1847; design: Heinrich Ferdinand Schuberth with modifications by von Aster and Busse; abandoned as a fortress at the end of the 1880s; in municipal ownership by 1886 at the latest; 1886–1888 the Reduit was provided with a single-story roof structure to serve as an administration building and laboratory for the Augustahospital planned by city architect Stübben, and the remaining parts were demolished for the construction of further buildings of the Augustahospital; end of 1934, first premises of the Mensa Academica for the newly built university with 700 meals per day; 1935/36 Chemical Institute of the University, an open ruin since October 30, 1944, after a bombing raid; 1945ff. University building; today: premises of the Geographical Institute; 2002–2004 renovation and renewed roof structure; preserved: core work.
