Fort V (Köln)

The construction of Fort V took place between 1843 and 1847, based on designs by Heinrich Ferdinand Schuberth, later modified by von Aster and Busse. Towards the end of the 1880s, the fortress lost its military significance and became municipal property by 1886 at the latest. From 1886 to 1888, the fort's reduit was converted to serve as an administrative building and laboratory for the planned Augustahospital, receiving a single-story roof structure, while other parts were demolished for the hospital's construction. In late 1934, the first premises for the Mensa Academica of the newly founded University of Cologne were established, serving 700 meals daily.
