Forte Airolo, a former key facility of Swiss national defense, is situated above the village of Airolo in the canton of Ticino. This fortress, located at the southern portal of the Gotthard Railway and Road, was once a masterpiece of military engineering and was considered the most modern of its kind in Switzerland until World War I.

History+

The construction of Forte Airolo took place between approximately 1886 and 1890. It was designed according to the plans of the Austro-Hungarian General Genie Inspector Daniel Freiherr von Salis-Soglio. The complex included an area for combat operations and accommodation, as well as flanking galleries. A one-kilometer-long tunnel, leading directly to the tunnel entrance, was also part of the defense system. The main task of the fortress was to secure the newly built Gotthard Railway. Although the fort's weaponry became obsolete over time, it was not decommissioned as a combat facility until 1947.
