Forte di Osoppo

The origins of Forte di Osoppo stretch back far: it was once a Celtic settlement, which later became a Roman oppidum, a fortified settlement. Historical accounts mention a siege by the Avars in 610, after they had defeated Duke Gisulf. In 902, the complex was plundered and devastated by the Hungarians. Later, in 1094, it was gifted to the Abbey of Sesto al Reghena. From 1420 onwards, the fortress developed into a strategically important defensive point for the mainland state of the Republic of Venice. In 1514, it was successfully defended against the imperial troops under Gerolamo Savorgnan. In 1797, it fell to the French. A particularly remarkable episode occurred in 1848 during the Italian Wars of Independence, when a corps of Italian volunteers successfully defended the fortress for over seven months against the attacking Austrians.

The Forte di Osoppo is located in Osoppo, in the Udine district, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy. It stands at an elevation of approximately 296 meters above sea level, offering excellent views of the surrounding morainic hills and the Alpine arc with the Tagliamento River.

Following extensive restoration work carried out after the 1976 earthquake, the fortress today presents itself as a powerful complex of remnants from various defensive structures, including tunnels, trenches, redoubts, and casemates. The site is accessible to visitors and can be explored.
