The Fortress can be visited

In the Italian city of Civitavecchia stands Forte Michelangelo, a fortress. Located at the southern end of the harbor, this Renaissance structure once served to protect against pirate attacks.

History+

The construction of Forte Michelangelo began in 1508 at the behest of Pope Julius II, who laid the foundation stone. Originally designed by Donato Bramante, the construction was continued after his death by his students Giuliano Leno and Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. The main fortress, with its rectangular layout and four circular corner towers (San Paolo, San Pietro, San Romolo, San Giulio), was completed in 1535.
