The Fraeylemaborg in Slochteren, Groningen province, is an impressive historical structure whose origins date back to the Middle Ages. Once a fortification, the current castle stands as a prominent example of regional architectural development and now houses a museum.

History+

The history of the Fraeylemaborg begins with a medieval fortification. As early as 1475, there was an estate named Frealemaheerd. Archival records from 1504 mention Remmer Fraeylema, indicating an early connection of the name with the property. The current castle was built in the 16th century, with the left wing added in the 17th century. In 1680, the castle changed hands when Evert Rengers sold it to Henric Piccardt, who was married to Anna Elizabeth Rengers, Evert's sister. After Piccardt's death, the castle fell into disrepair. A crucial turning point came in 1781 when Hendrik de Sandra Veldman acquired the Fraeylemaborg and had it rebuilt into its present form.
