Franziskaner

The founding of the Franciscan monastery in Schwäbisch Gmünd is dated to 1222, although the earliest documentary evidence dates from 1281. The convent belonged to the Upper German (Strasbourg) Order Province. In the 15th century, the foundation was mistakenly set to 1208, which was not consistent with the emergence of the Franciscan Order. Research into the building fabric of the monastery church suggests a foundation before 1250. After a fire in 1689, a new building was considered, with the foundation stone laid in 1718. In 1736, the monastery founded a school, which later became a grammar school. The secularization in 1803 led to the dissolution of many monasteries, but the Franziskaner was initially allowed to continue and housed Dominicans. The last friars left the monastery in 1822. From 1825, the building was converted into a Catholic teacher training college, which was completed by 1827. Later, it housed the Gmünder Aufbaugymnasium. From 1974, a gradual transformation into a Catholic community center took place.

The former Franciscan monastery is located in the old town of Schwäbisch Gmünd in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at an altitude of approx. 328 m above sea level.

Today, the Franziskaner is known as the "House of Ecclesiastical Services" and houses numerous Catholic institutions as well as halls for celebrations and events. These include the parish office of St. Franziskus parish, the Catholic administrative center for the deanery of Schwäbisch Gmünd, and Caritas Ost Württemberg.
