Franziskaner in Lechenich

The origins of the monastery date back to 1649 when Franciscans acquired property in Lechenich. The monks, belonging to the Cologne Franciscan Province, began constructing a monastery and an accompanying church between 1655 and 1665. This complex was situated in the southwestern part of the town, near today's Herriger Tor. The establishment of the monastery was approved by Elector Ferdinand in 1648, following a request from Lechenich citizens. Already in May 1648, the Franciscans received a house with sufficient building land as a gift, extending between Klosterstraße and Melchiorstraße to the southwestern city wall. Following the secularization in 1802, the monastery was dissolved, and most of its buildings were demolished.

The former monastery is located in Lechenich, a town in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The site is approximately 103 meters above sea level.

Few traces of the original monastery buildings remain after the secularization and demolition. However, today's Klosterstraße in Lechenich commemorates the former presence of the order. An early 18th-century town view, showing the monastery on the southwestern outskirts, provides an impression of its former extent.
