Franziskanerinnenkloster Dillingen an der Donau

The origins of the community date back to the first half of the 13th century. In 1241, a community of Beguines received a meadow and a herb garden as a donation from Count Hartmann IV of Dillingen and his son, Hartmann, who later became Bishop of Augsburg. The buildings were constructed directly against the city wall. Later, the Beguines evolved into a regulated Third Order Franciscan congregation. For centuries, the convent housed between 20 and 30 sisters. After a devastating fire in 1438, which completely destroyed the building, reconstruction took almost three decades. In the 18th century, a comprehensive Baroque renovation took place, during which a dedicated convent church was built by Johann Georg Fischer, who also designed the convent's west wing. In 1803, following expropriation, the convent passed to the Teutonic Order, and in 1805, to the Electorate of Bavaria. Although dissolution was threatened during secularization, the Franciscans were allowed to remain in the convent because they managed the girls' school. Novices were again admitted from 1829, and since 1843, numerous branch houses were founded throughout Southern Germany, with Dillingen remaining the general mother house. The congregation is now active internationally, and the mother house underwent extensive renovation in 2005 to address structural issues that had arisen from the integration of the medieval city wall into the building.

The convent is located in Dillingen an der Donau in the Free State of Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 439 meters above sea level.

The Franciscan Convent in Dillingen continues to serve as the mother house of the Dillingen Franciscans and is an active center of spiritual life and education. The complex is protected as a historical monument.
