The Franciscan Convent of St. Maria Stern in Augsburg is a significant architectural monument in Bavaria. It was founded by two daughters of Augsburg citizens and is notable for its convent church, whose onion dome served as an architectural model in the region.

History+

The convent was founded in 1258 by two Augsburg citizens' daughters named Canione. Between 1574 and 1576, master builder Johannes Holl, father of the renowned Elias Holl, constructed the convent church dedicated to Saints Anna and Elisabeth. Its distinctive onion dome influenced regional architecture. In 1802, the convent was dissolved during the Bavarian secularization, but it was re-established in 1828 by King Ludwig I of Bavaria. In the 19th century, the congregation established numerous daughter foundations across Bavaria, particularly in Swabia and Lower Franconia, focusing on girls' education, nursing, elder care, orphan education, and preschool education in so-called children's homes. During the bombing night of February 25-26, 1944, the convent was almost completely destroyed, though the church and its tower survived. Reconstruction took place from 1946 to 1953.
