Franziskaner Abbey

The Franciscan Monastery Rothenburg o.d. Tauber is a former Franciscan monastery in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Bavaria (Diocese of Bamberg). The former monastery church is now an Evangelical Lutheran parish church.

The monastery, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was founded in 1281 by Hermann von Hornburg, among others, a bailiff. It died out in 1548 during the Reformation. The buildings of the voluntarily abandoned monastery first housed a Latin school, later an apartment for pastors' widows. After 1805, the buildings served, among other things, as a salt warehouse. Parts of the complex (cloister, refectory, etc.) were demolished, much of the inventory destroyed or sold (such as the so-called "Wiblinger Altar" by Tilman Riemenschneider). Nevertheless, the church is still an important example of a mendicant order church with a rood screen and important art treasures.
