Franziskaner Abbey

The origins of the monastery date back to the early 15th century, when a convent for Augustinian canonesses was established at Anger around 1400. This complex was expanded between 1480 and 1519 with the monastery church of Our Lady of Anger. After the convent of women died out around 1550 and stood vacant for ten years, the monastery was finally dissolved in 1564. From 1695, a new building was constructed under Philipp Plank, and the complex was handed over to the Franciscan Reformists of the Bavarian Franciscan Province. With an interruption from 1822 to 1859, they used the monastery until 1985. Since 1987, Polish Franciscans of the Upper Silesian Franciscan Province have been responsible for pastoral care.

The Franciscan Monastery is located in Berchtesgaden in the Berchtesgadener Land, Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 578 meters above sea level.

The monastery complex and its church are listed as architectural monuments in the Bavarian Monument List. Parts of the complex have long been used for other purposes, including formerly for the Berchtesgaden District Court and the National Park House. Since 2015, a part of the monastery has housed a “House of Encounter” operated by the German Caritas Association.
