Franciscan Abbey

The monastery, dedicated to Saint Stephen, was founded in 1628 by Heinrich von Knoeringen, then Prince-Bishop of Augsburg, and Abbot Martin of St. Mang. The first Franciscans initially occupied the former Jesuit chapel and later the Church of St. Stephen, which served as a parish church until the 13th century. Construction of the monastery building began in 1629, and the church underwent extensive renovations in the following years. At the bishop's request, the Franciscans took over preaching at the parish masses in the monastery church of St. Mang. In 1632, the newly built monastery suffered damage during the passage of Swedish troops, necessitating extensive renovations. Over time, the complex was expanded, including a brewery in 1662 and a brandy distillery in 1695. A second monastery wing was added from 1712.
