The monastery, dedicated to Saint Anne, was founded in 1564 by Prince-Bishop Urban von Trennbach. It was inhabited by the Franciscan Observants and initially belonged to the Bavarian Custody of the Upper German Province of Argentina, before becoming part of the Bavarian Franciscan Province from 1625. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 as part of the secularization.

The monastery complex, constructed between 1587 and 1588 by Giovanni Spazzo the Younger, has largely retained its original structure. Since 1857, it has housed the Heiliggeist-Stiftung's tavern. A portion of the building has been utilized by the Marist Fathers since 1978, who also oversee the telephone counseling service there. The current Votive Church originates from the former monastery church built in 1619, which served as a warehouse after secularization and was subsequently renovated and restored multiple times. The St. Anna Chapel, built in 1588 by Leonard Uttner and adorned with Renaissance frescoes from 1590, now functions as an exhibition space for the Passau Art Association.
