Franziskaner Monastery

The monastery was founded in 1221 by Bishop Konrad IV of Frontenhausen, together with Count Palatine Otto VIII of Bavaria and King Henry (VII.). The Franciscans, also known as Minorites, built the Minorite Church between 1255 and 1275 on the site of an earlier Salvator Chapel. The church's choir was renovated around 1350. The three-aisled Gothic pillar basilica developed into the order's largest house of worship in Southern Germany. The monastery initially belonged to the Upper German or Strasbourg ecclesiastical province and from 1625 to the Bavarian Franciscan Province. In 1799, the monastery was dissolved during secularization, and the church lost its sacred function. The patron saints of the monastery were Cassian and Franciscus Stigmaticus.

The former Franciscan Monastery is located in the city of Regensburg in Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 355 meters above sea level.

After its dissolution in 1799, the monastery buildings and church were used for various purposes. The church served, among other things, as a customs and toll hall, exercise hall, construction storage, and hotel storage. The convent buildings were used as a residence and a barracks. Large parts of the monastery, including the cloister with a late Gothic monastery well, have been preserved. Gravestones from abandoned Regensburg cemeteries were placed on the church walls in the 1930s. During World War II, the Minorite Church suffered significant bomb damage.
