Franziskanerkloster Augsburg

The first Franciscan settlement in Germany was established in Augsburg in 1221, likely under the patronage of Bishop Siegfried von Rechberg. From this location, the order quickly spread throughout the German Empire. The monastery aligned itself with the Conventuals, who upheld the possession of assets, leading to a certain relaxation of monastic discipline. During the Reformation, the monastery dissolved itself in 1526. The preserved choir of the former monastery church is now part of the Protestant Barfüßerkirche, and the converted monastery buildings currently serve as a retirement home.

In 1614, a new foundation was established by Franciscan Observants in the Jakobervorstadt. This establishment was significantly supported by the Fugger brothers and the Augsburg Cathedral Chapter. Between 1633 and 1635, the monks were expelled. The second Franciscan monastery was finally dissolved in 1807 as part of the secularization. The former monastery buildings now house the Church and Rectory of St. Maximilian, after having been used as a school for a period.

The historical sites of the Franciscan monasteries are located in the city of Augsburg, in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany.

The choir of the first monastery church is now integrated into the Protestant Barfüßerkirche, and the former monastery buildings serve as a retirement home. The buildings of the second monastery now house the Church and Rectory of St. Maximilian.
