Franziskanerkloster Bremen

The Franciscans likely settled in Bremen around 1225. Construction of the monastery itself is dated to 1258. It comprised the still-existing three-aisled Gothic St. Johann Church, built in the 14th century in the style of a mendicant order church and expanded into a hall church in the 15th century. The adjacent monastic buildings and courtyards to the south, however, have not been preserved. From the 14th to the 16th century, approximately 20 to 30 Franciscan friars, also known as “Barefoot Friars,” lived here, belonging to the Saxon Franciscan Province. Around 1300, the Bremen monastery served as the main monastery of the “Custody of Bremen,” a regional sub-organization of Saxonia. Following the Reformation, the monastery was closed in 1529, and its buildings were used as a municipal hospital from 1531. From 1691, it housed the mentally ill. The church served, among other things, as a hospital church and, until 1801, as a place of worship for Reformed congregations. The dilapidated monastic buildings were demolished in 1834 to make way for residential constructions. Later, in 1965, new residential buildings for the Provostry of St. Johannis were erected on this site, which have been listed as historical monuments since 1973.

Of the original monastery buildings, only St. Johann Church remains today, which continues to be used as a sacred building. The surrounding areas are characterized by residential development.
