Franziskanerkloster (Coburg, Germany)

The monastery was founded in 1250 by the noble families of Schaumburg and Coburg. Construction began on January 21, 1250. The monastery and its church were dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and belonged to the Saxon Franciscan Province. It was the second monastic foundation in Coburg after the Benedictine provostry of St. Peter and Paul. In 1432, Hermann Bernhard, a member of the Coburg convent, was appointed auxiliary bishop of Würzburg, having already been titular bishop of Akkon since 1415. Towards the end of the 15th century, the monastery adopted the Martinian Constitutions, which provided for a moderate interpretation of the Franciscan vow of poverty. In 1489, the guardian of the Coburg monastery participated in the reform of the Wittenberg convent according to these constitutions. The monastery was dissolved in 1525 during the Reformation. The monks handed over the buildings and all possessions to the city of Coburg and, if they remained faithful to the order, moved to the Benedictine monastery of Mönchröden.

Parts of the former monastery buildings are now integrated into the old wing of Ehrenburg Palace. These premises serve as storage rooms for the Coburg State Library. A stone holy water font from the monastery's founding period can be seen there as the only remaining relic. A necrology of the monastery, rediscovered in 1940 and containing entries from around 1260, is an important source for the history of Coburg and the monastery.
