The former Franciscan monastery in Ellingen, located in the Central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, stands as a remarkable example of Baroque architecture. As a protected monument in Bavaria, it bears witness to a rich history and religious significance in the region.

History+

As early as 1660, the local Landkomturs of the Teutonic Order in Ellingen sought to establish a Franciscan hospice. Despite initial resistance from the Capuchins and the Bishop of Eichstätt, it was not until 1736 that the necessary approval was obtained from the Deutschmeister and Cologne Elector Clemens August I of Bavaria. The foundation stone was laid on April 29, 1738, and the simply designed monastery church, in the style of a mendicant order church, was consecrated in 1740. In 1769, the Bavarian Elector ordered the Bavarian Franciscans to abandon all monasteries outside Electoral Bavaria. Consequently, the Ellingen monastery reverted in 1773 to the Strasbourg order province, from which the Bavarian province had emerged in 1625. Following secularization and the demolition of the Heiligenblut monastery, the remaining Franciscans arrived in Ellingen on May 25, 1809, bringing with them the relics of Saint Severin. In 1818, the monastery was finally dissolved at the instigation of Field Marshal Carl Philipp von Wrede, who had received Ellingen as a fief.
