Enns Abbey

The first foundation of the monastery by Franciscans occurred before 1280. It is officially recorded as an existing monastery from 1309. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the establishment received patronage from the Walseer family, which was expressed, among other things, in the construction of the Walseer Chapel. During the Reformation, the monastery had to be abandoned in 1551. From 1567 to 1574, the building housed the Upper Austrian regional school. In 1644, Franciscan Conventuals, also known as Minorites, settled in Enns and reoccupied the monastery. Under Emperor Joseph II, the monastery was secularized in 1784 and confiscated by the religious fund.
