Enns Abbey

The first foundation of the monastery by Franciscans occurred before 1280. It is officially recorded as an existing monastery from 1309. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the establishment received patronage from the Walseer family, which was expressed, among other things, in the construction of the Walseer Chapel. During the Reformation, the monastery had to be abandoned in 1551. From 1567 to 1574, the building housed the Upper Austrian regional school. In 1644, Franciscan Conventuals, also known as Minorites, settled in Enns and reoccupied the monastery. Under Emperor Joseph II, the monastery was secularized in 1784 and confiscated by the religious fund. In 1790, the property was sold to the city of Enns and subsequently used for various purposes such as a theater, military academy, and orphanage. In the mid-19th century, Bishop Franz Joseph Rudigier and parts of the citizenry sought to re-establish religious orders. In 1859, brothers of the Tyrolean Franciscan province took over the former monastery, which they acquired in 1883. Between 1892 and 1894, a part of the building was converted into its own monastery church.

The Franciscan Monastery of Enns is situated in the city of Enns in the Linz Land district, in the federal state of Upper Austria, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 277 meters above sea level.

Today, the monastery once again houses a small convent of Franciscans who are active in pastoral care. A notable cloister is located southwest of the monastery church.
