The Franciscan Monastery in Hildesheim, a significant historical complex, was founded in the 13th century and shaped the city's religious and social life for centuries. It stands as a testament to the early presence of the Franciscan Order in Northern Germany and its role in pastoral care and supporting the bishop.

History+

The Franciscans settled in Hildesheim in 1223, arriving from Speyer as the first in Northern Germany. Bishop Konrad II promoted the establishment of the new religious community to offer modern forms of pastoral care to the urban population and strengthen his own position. The friars initially received simple accommodation before Bishop Konrad II granted them a building site west of the cathedral around 1240. Between 1240 and 1246, a monastic complex with a church dedicated to Saint Martin was built there. The monastery, part of the Saxon Franciscan Province, established a study program for novices as early as 1245. In the 15th century, parts of the complex were replaced by new constructions and the church was expanded to accommodate the growing pilgrimage to the tomb of Brother Konrad, revered as a saint, who died in 1261. The Gothic Portiuncula Chapel was completed on the east side of the church in 1490. The monastery's existence ended with the Reformation around the mid-16th century.
