Franciscan Monastery Kadaň

The origins of the monastery date back to 1469, when a chapel was first mentioned at this site. In 1473, the first Franciscans settled here and began constructing provisional buildings. A three-nave church was consecrated in 1480 and later served as the burial place for the Lords of Lobkowicz. The monastery's development was hindered by the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War, leading to restoration work in the second half of the 17th century. During the Josephine Reforms in 1785, the monastery narrowly escaped dissolution. After a largely peaceful 19th century, the monastery was used by the German Wehrmacht during World War II.
