Franciscan Friary Kyritz
The Franciscan Monastery of Kyritz, a historic architectural monument, is located in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin region of Brandenburg. The ruins of the monastery bear witness to a long history and are now a place of cultural encounter.
History+
The Franciscan monastery in Kyritz was founded in the second half of the 13th century, with its first documentary mention dating to 1303. The monastery, dedicated to Saints Mary and John the Evangelist, was run by the Franciscans. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved and secularized between 1539 and 1541, bringing an end to its monastic use.

The former monastery grounds are situated in the town of Kyritz in the federal state of Brandenburg, nestled within the landscape of Ostprignitz-Ruppin. The geographical elevation is approximately 44 meters above sea level.

Today, impressive remnants of the former Franciscan monastery are preserved, including round-arched windows and vault ribs of the early Gothic hall church. Visitors can explore the restored church and monastery gardens. Furthermore, the site hosts an exhibition by the Historical Local History Association for Kyritz and Ostprignitz. The area is currently being developed into a cultural center.
