The former Franciscan Monastery in Landshut, Bavaria, is a historic sacred building now protected as a monument. Its history dates back to the 13th century and reflects a dynamic development within the Franciscan Order.

History+

The monastery was founded in 1280 by Duke Heinrich XIII of Lower Bavaria. It was initially part of the Strasbourg monastic province. Following a city expansion in 1338, the monastery was located within the city walls, remnants of which are still visible south and east of the complex. Over time, the monastery gained prosperity through the support of the nobility and the bourgeoisie, which, however, contradicted the Franciscan ideal of poverty. This led to the introduction of strict observance in 1466. Another reform occurred in 1620 when Duke Maximilian transformed the monastery into one of Bavaria's first Reformed monasteries, adopting the Italian reform of the order. As part of the secularization in Bavaria, the monastery was dissolved in 1802. The early Gothic basilica church was demolished in 1808. The convent buildings initially served as a fencing school and were later sold. However, since 1835, Franciscans have been present again in Landshut at a different location.

Since 2016, the buildings house the LANDSHUTmuseum, dedicated to the city's history. Additionally, temporary exhibitions are held, such as the current display “Landshut during National Socialism. Victims. Perpetrators. Spectators.”.
