Franziskanerkloster St. Bernhardin

The initiative to establish a Franciscan convent originated in 1458 with parish priest Leonhard Märklin. Five friars settled in the new community, which quickly gained recognition among the population. In 1461, chaplain Ulrich Rist acquired a farm in Lenzfried to build a monastery, which was assigned to the Upper German Order Province. The first monastery church and convent were consecrated to Saint Bernardino by the auxiliary bishop of Augsburg in 1466. Due to the turmoil of the Schmalkaldic War and the German Peasants' War, the Franciscans withdrew from the monastery in 1548. From then until 1643, the building served as a refuge for Franciscan nuns who had fled from the imperial city. In 1649, a Franciscan convent with twelve friars returned and took on pastoral duties in the parish. In the same year, the Franciscan nuns moved to the St. Anna convent opposite. In 1663, three new altars were consecrated in the monastery church. A reconstruction into a three-wing complex was carried out by Hans Mayer in 1683. A new high altar was acquired from Kloster Lechfeld in 1748. Between 1765 and 1767, the monastery was rebuilt under Joseph Galler. The secularization in 1805 led to the final dissolution of the monastery. The church and monastery complex were preserved, with the monastery church of St. Magnus becoming the parish church. The former monastery buildings subsequently served as a rectory, a lazaret from 1814, and later as a school. Between 1892 and 1893, the church received a bell tower, designed by Hugo Höfl. Since 2002, a parish community has existed with the neighboring parish of St. Ulrich.

The former monastery church of St. Magnus now functions as a Catholic parish church. The three-story monastery complex, a simple three-wing building with a southern tract, underwent partial alterations in the 19th century. The monastery wall on the east side dates from the 18th century. The parish church is a late Gothic hall building with a polygonal choir apse and a square tower, featuring a two-story gallery. The St. Joseph's Chapel was added to the main building in 1688.
