The Franciscan monastery in Lindau was founded in 1224 by Abbess Offemia von Pflegelberg. From 1239, it was part of the Upper German (Strasbourg) Province of the Franciscan Order and belonged to the Custody of Lake Constance. In the 14th century, the community joined the Observant movement within the order. In 1528, during the Reformation, which was also influenced in Lindau by a preacher from this monastery, the institution was dissolved. The valuable holdings of the monastery library were transferred to the Imperial City Library of Lindau, established in 1538. The former monastery church now houses the Lindau City Theater, which saw its first performance in 1887 and reopened in 1951 with Mozart's “The Marriage of Figaro.”
