The Franciscan Monastery in Lübeck, also known as St. Catherine's Monastery, is a historic sacred building in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein. It represents a significant early settlement of the Franciscan Order in Northern Germany and is a testament to medieval monastic culture and architecture.
History+
The monastery was founded in 1225 when the Franciscans, an order established only in 1210, settled in Lübeck. This marked the first establishment of the Friars Minor in Northern Germany. The city council provided them with land for the construction of the monastery and church. The monastic church quickly became a popular burial site for Lübeck citizens, which led to a conflict with the Bishop of Lübeck in 1277, though this was resolved in favor of the Franciscans. Another dispute between 1299 and 1318 did not diminish the order's popularity among the populace. From 1319, the reconstruction of the monastic church began in the Brick Gothic style, supported by important benefactors. The convent buildings were expanded, and around 1350-1354, the church was vaulted. The monastery existed until the Reformation in 1531.
Location+
The former Franciscan Monastery is located in the city of Lübeck in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 20 meters above sea level.
