Franziskanerkloster Marburg

The founding of the Franciscan monastery in Marburg took place in 1235, when a convent of the order was first documented. It is presumed that the establishment of the Franciscans in the city around 1234/1235 was connected with the work of Saint Elisabeth, who had established a hospital in Marburg and was close to the spirituality of Francis of Assisi. In the late 15th century, Landgrave Wilhelm III introduced strict observance in the Marburg convent after long reform disputes. In the course of the Reformation in Hesse, the monastery was dissolved in 1528 by Landgrave Philipp "the Magnanimous". Since then, the former monastery buildings, which have been rebuilt several times over the years, have been used by Marburg University.

The Franciscan Monastery is located in Marburg-Biedenkopf, a city in Hesse, Germany. It is situated on the southwestern edge of Marburg's historic Old Town.

The original monastery buildings are currently used by Philipps University Marburg for various purposes. The complex is designated as a cultural monument in Hesse and bears witness to the site's long history.
