St. Peter und Paul

The Franciscan monastery in Meißen was founded around 1258. The convent, along with monasteries in Cottbus, Freiberg, Dresden, Oschatz, Torgau, and Seußlitz, belonged to the Custody of Meißen within the extensive Saxon monastic province (Saxonia). The monastery church of St. Peter and Paul was constructed between 1350 and 1400. Following a fire in 1447, the church's vaulting was renewed between 1447 and 1457. In the course of the Reformation, the convent was dissolved in 1539. The choir fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1823. A timber ceiling was installed in the nave, which was lowered around 1900 for its use as a museum by the Meißen Antiquities Association. A Neo-Gothic staircase was added for access. In 1929, a pedestrian passage was created in the west, utilizing the former portals. The church was later fitted with steel installations and adapted for museum use.

The monastery is situated in the city of Meißen in the federal state of Saxony, Germany.

The preserved sections of the former Franciscan monastery now serve as the home for the Meißen City Museum. The building's architecture, constructed from quarry stone, granite, and sandstone, presents itself as a simple Gothic hall church with buttresses and slender tracery windows. Inside, numerous epitaphs and funerary monuments of nobility and wealthy Meißen citizens, as well as other regional monuments, are exhibited. The north and west wings of the cloister remain.
