Franziskanerkloster Mosbach

The presence of Franciscans in Mosbach dates back to the Thirty Years' War, when they temporarily took over parish pastoral care. After a period of prohibition of Catholic services following the change of faith in the Electoral Palatinate, religious freedom from 1685 enabled a new foundation. The Mosbach district bailiff Johann Michael Speicher initiated the monastery construction, and in 1686, the first Franciscans arrived from Tauberbischofsheim and Miltenberg. The foundation stone for the church was laid in June 1686, but initially, a monastery wing with a chapel was completed in 1688. The Franciscans engaged in pastoral care in surrounding areas and gained strong support through their efforts in the Palatine War of Succession. The monastery church, presumably a hall building with a barrel vault, was completed in 1698 and consecrated in 1700. It featured a roof turret with bells and was equipped through donations, including from the Elector. Between 1768 and 1770, an expansion added two more wings, including a novitiate building, whose foundation stone Elector Carl Theodor personally laid. From 1771, the monastery served as a training center for novices of the entire order province. In addition to pastoral care, the brothers engaged in charitable activities and founded the Franciscan monastery in Sinsheim in 1714. From 1720 to 1738, it maintained its own gymnasium. The monastery was dissolved in 1808.

The monastery was located in Mosbach, a town in the Neckar-Odenwald district in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

After the dissolution of the monastery, parts of the complex, including the Franciscan church, were demolished. The remaining buildings were repurposed and now house the Mosbach Regional Court and Local Court. The Mosbach prison is now located on the site of the former monastery church.
