Franziskanerkloster Nürnberg

The monastery of the Franciscan Order, founded in Italy in 1210, was established in 1224 by the Nuremberg burgraves and the patrician Konrad Waldstromer near St. Lorenz Church. It was settled from the Franciscan monastery in Bamberg. In 1256, construction of the church began, supported by indulgences granted by Bishop Hildebrand von Möhren of Eichstätt. Numerous Nuremberg patrician families, including the Gross, Ebner, and Pfinzing, supported the order, and over 350 patricians found their final resting place in the monastery church between 1228 and 1501. In 1447, Observants, mainly from Heidelberg, took over the monastery with the support of the patriciate. In the second half of the 15th century, the convent experienced a flourishing period of religious and scientific life, with figures such as Nikolaus Glasberger, who wrote a chronicle of the Franciscan Order, and Stephan Fridolin, author of the “Schatzbehalter”. Following the Nuremberg Religious Colloquy in 1525, the Franciscans refused to join the Reformation. This led to a ban on preaching and pastoral care. The church was closed in 1529, and all divine services were prohibited in 1541. With the death of the last Franciscan in 1562, the monastery became the property of the city. From 1557, the buildings served as a foundling home, and from 1671, as a women's correctional facility. A fire in the same year destroyed the church and parts of the monastery, with reconstruction in Baroque style occurring between 1682 and 1689. In 1913, the former monastery was demolished; only a remnant of the choir and one bay of the Franciscan church survived and are now integrated into a bank building.
