History+

The origins of the Franciscans in Paderborn trace back to approximately 1232, when brothers of the order settled in the Johanneskloster am Kamp. This initial monastery existed until the 16th century, when it was abandoned due to the Reformation, with the last Franciscans leaving around 1530. The buildings were later taken over by the Jesuits. In 1658, a new Franciscan monastery was established on Westernstraße. The religious received a house with a garden as a gift and moved in during March of the same year. From 1663, the foundation stone for a new convent building was laid, followed by a new church in 1668. A Baroque complex in the Italian style emerged. The monastery belonged to the Saxon Franciscan Province of the Holy Cross until its merger into the German Franciscan Province of Saint Elisabeth in 2010. The monastery continues to exist today.
