Franziskanerkloster Prenzlau

The Franciscans, also known as Friars Minor, established themselves in Prenzlau around the mid-13th century, shortly after the town received its city rights in 1234. The monastery church, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, was completed by 1253 at the latest, serving as the burial place for Bishop Wilhelm of Cammin in that year. Typical of a mendicant order, the church was simply designed and lacked a tower. In the late 14th century, the interior was enhanced by the addition of a vault. The convent buildings were located north of the church, adjacent to the city wall. The monastery, also known as the “Grey Monastery” due to the color of the monks' habits, belonged to the Custody of Stettin within the Saxon Franciscan Province and was part of the Diocese of Cammin. In the 15th century, it developed into an important study monastery with an extensive library, focusing on philosophical works. During the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1543. The church was converted for Lutheran worship in 1598 by Bernd von Arnim and re-consecrated as the Trinity Church. The convent buildings were demolished in 1735.

Today, primarily the former monastery church remains of the once extensive monastic complex, which is protected as a cultural monument. The church is a five-bay fieldstone hall with cross vaults and a small bell tower above the east gable. Lancet windows in groups of three illuminate the interior. Traces of the former sacristy are visible in the eastern bay. The convent buildings were dismantled in the 18th century, with only their traces discernible on the north wall of the church.
