The Franciscans of the Cologne Province began their pastoral work in Boppard at the beginning of the 17th century. With the support of the Trier Elector Lothar von Metternich, they received permission to settle in 1623. After initial temporary arrangements, including the use of the Walburgis Chapel, the friars were able to move into a larger property in 1628 and erect their first chapel there. The foundation stone for the current monastery building was laid in 1660, and between 1683 and 1686, the adjoining monastery church was built. In addition to their spiritual duties, the Franciscans founded a Latin school in 1764. The monastery was dissolved during the secularization of 1802. The monastery church initially served as a military hospital and later as a wood store. The monastery buildings were acquired by the Prussian state in 1853 and replaced by new buildings for a Catholic teacher training college between 1864 and 1868. After various uses, including as a state teacher training institution and briefly as the seat of the NSDAP Gauleitung, as well as a confiscation by French occupation troops, the complex housed a state grammar school for advanced education from 1954 to 1983. Since 1987, the complex has served as a seminar building for the Federal Academy of Public Administration.

The monastery is located in Boppard, a town in the Rhein-Hunsrück district of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is situated within the historic town fortifications of the upper town, directly on the Rheinallee. To the east, the site is bordered by the still-preserved town wall.

The former monastery complex, including the preserved monastery church and the adjacent Ritter-Schwalbach-Haus, is now used as a seminar building by the Federal Academy of Public Administration. The monastery church, a long, single-nave hall building in Gothicizing Baroque style, features a ribbed vault. In the 19th century, an intermediate floor was added, creating a chapel on the upper floor. The complex is a registered cultural monument and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002.
