Franziskanerkloster Tauberbischofsheim

The origins of the monastery date back to 1629, when Father Adam Bürvenich from the Cologne Franciscan Province was active in Tauberbischofsheim. With the consent of the city council, the bailiff, and the local pastor, a Franciscan settlement was founded, initially housed in the chaplaincy building near St. Sebastian's Chapel. Even during the Swedish occupation from 1631 to 1635, the Franciscans remained active, celebrating a first mass in the monastery church in 1631 and caring for plague victims in 1634. In 1636, the friars moved into the Tauberbischofsheim Hospital with St. Elisabeth's Chapel, after the Elector had allocated part of the hospital to them. Through the acquisition of adjacent properties, the monastery was expanded in 1655. A year later, the foundation stone for the Lioba Church was laid, whose main patroness became Saint Lioba after Father Bürvenich brought relics of the saint to Tauberbischofsheim. From 1665, Franciscans of the Thuringian Province took over the monastery. After a failed expansion attempt in 1702, the monastery was fundamentally rebuilt and laid out in four wings from 1719 to 1722, the monastery church was enlarged, and a new sacristy was built. A flood in 1732 allowed for the expansion of the monastery garden. From 1688, Franciscans taught at the Tauberbischofsheim Franciscan Gymnasium. After Tauberbischofsheim became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806, which resulted in a drastic cut in the budget, the monastery was dissolved in 1823. Part of the buildings burned down in 1862 but was rebuilt, as the gymnasium was by then housed there.

The former Franciscan monastery is located in Tauberbischofsheim, a town in the Main-Tauber district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The former monastery buildings now house the Matthias-Grünewald-Gymnasium, which received its current name in 1954. Excavations in 1968 in the former monastery church revealed wall remains of an earlier east-west church and graves under the organ loft.
