Franziskanerkloster Vossenack

The foundation stone for the monastery, church, gymnasium, and boarding school was laid in 1966 by the then Cologne Franciscan Province of the Three Holy Kings. The inauguration took place in 1967. The choice of location in Vossenack, in the middle of the Hürtgenwald forest, was a conscious decision. Tens of thousands of people had lost their lives there during the Battle of Hürtgenwald in the winter of 1944/45. As a successor institution to Exaten College near Roermond, the monastery was intended to provide a contrast to this historical suffering. To support the educational institutions, the Franziskus Foundation was established in 1985 and continues to exist today. Until 2018, the school was led by a Franciscan.

The monastery is located in Vossenack, a district of the municipality of Hürtgenwald in the Düren district, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Today, six Franciscans still belong to the monastery. The associated gymnasium educates approximately 580 students. Since 2012, the monastery church has displayed a Stations of the Cross created by Father Laurentius Ulrich Englisch, a Beuys student who himself worked as a teacher and art educator at Vossenack Monastery.
